April 26, 2010

On April 10, the LSU Student Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) once again competed in the ChemE Car Competition at the Southern Regional Meeting of AIChE. This year's meeting was hosted by North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The car team placed second overall this year with their car "Flyin' Hawaiian;" the team from Florida received first place and the team from Puerto Rico-Mayaguez received third. The LSU team won first place in the poster competition and, once again, received the award for the most creative design. This second place win will send them to the national competition for the fourth straight year. The 2010 National Meeting of AIChE will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah, November 7-12.

The members of this year's car team include the following undergraduate chemical engineering students: Angela Juncker, Ryan Pazdera, Kevin Euggino, Adesua Eigbe, and Khiet Mai. Francisco Hung, assistant professor and holder of the Gordon A. and Mary Cain Professorship in Chemical Engineering continues to serve as the faculty adviser for the ChemE car team. The team extended a warm thanks to all of the corporate sponsors who have generously provided funds in support of the car team; especially Paul Rodriguez and Joe Bell, in the ChE Shop, for their invaluable knowledge and assistance in building the car.

On Tuesday, May 4, from 9-11:30 am, in the CHE Unit Ops lab, the junior and senior chemical engineering students will present their optimization class designs (juniors) and capstone designs (seniors) in the form of poster presentations. Visitors from local industry will be present to evaluate the posters and to provide assessment data for ABET outcomes.

The list below is an overview of the car teams' achievements in the past four years. To earn a spot to compete in the national meeting, an institution must be one of the top three overall finalists at a regional competition. To earn a spot to compete in the world competition, an institution must be one of the top two finalists at the national competition.
