Three Engineering Students Named in the Class of 2009 Tiger Twelve

May 12, 2009

  • John Patrick Casey, Jr. named to LSU Tiger Twelve

Three College of Engineering students: John Casey, Edwin Lee, and Yunan Yuan were recognized for their exceptional achievement by being named one of the Class of 2009 Tiger Twelve. The Tiger Twelve recognizes student leaders across the University for their efforts on campus and in the community. Selection is based on the principles articulated in LSU’s Commitment to Community, which was adopted as a “Statement of University Position” for the university community in 1995.

Recipients must contribute positively to the life of the campus and surrounding community; must hold themselves to the highest standards of academic, personal and social integrity; must practice justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and must respect the dignity of all persons and accept individual differences. Nominations were accepted from the university community, and a committee selected the final 12 from a pool of more than 200 nominees from a mix of all majors.

John Casey is a biological engineering major, from Mandeville, Louisiana, who attended Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. He is in his senior year and is the president of both Habitat for Humanity and the Mandarin Association of Life and Language. He is a recipient of the nationally competitive Goldwater Scholarship by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program and recently was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellows Program scholarship. Casey was also chosen for the Second Team of the USA Today All-USA College Academic Team, has been awarded a Critical Languages Scholarship to study Mandarin in Harbin, China, and was a finalist for the Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships last fall. He plans to pursue a PhD in biological engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after graduation. He hopes to conduct research and develop promising genetic phenomena such as RNA into practical, expedient therapies and apply these techniques to the amelioration of ailments such as cancer or AIDS.

Edwin Lee is an electrical & computer engineering major, from Zachary, Louisiana, who attended Redemptorist High School in Baton Rouge. He is in his senior year and a member of the National Society of Black Engineers. He is a recipient of the William H. and Tonya B. Ditto Memorial to Michel B. Voorhies, Marion B. Reed, and Ambrose K. Ramsey Engineering Scholarship. He is currently conducting research at the Center for Computation and Technology on supercomputing nodes. Edwin is interested in furthering his education through graduate school, focusing his efforts on the biological and biomedical engineering applications of electrical engineering.

Yunan Yuan, a computer engineering major, is from Jinan, China, and graduated from McKinley High School in Baton Rouge. She is in her senior year and is president of Eta Kappa Nu, vice chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, engineering council representative for the Society of Women Engineers and a member of Roteract (among many other organizations). She has completed internships with Microsoft, Chevron and Halliburton.
