Hughes Receives Zaki Bassiouni Excellence in Instruction Award

May 4, 2009

  • Dr. Richard G. Hughes Receives Inaugural Zaki Bassiouni Excellence in Instruction Award

Dr. Richard G. Hughes, associate professor and holder of the Mr. and Mrs. Boyd H. McMullan Professorship in the Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering (PETE) has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Zaki Bassiouni Excellence in Instruction Award. His award was announced during the PETE Industry Advisory Committee meeting in April 2009.

Recipients of this award must be faculty of undergraduate petroleum engineering courses in PETE, and are selected for their excellence in instruction, easily understood teaching methods, demonstration of high -yet fair- expectations for students, and willingness to spend time mentoring and interacting with students. It is the donor's intent that this award is given to the professor who students consider their best professor or instructor during their undergraduate years of study. For the 2009 award, 25 PETE seniors were eligible to vote.

Hughes expressed his appreciation of receiving the inaugural award, stating "Bill and Cornelia Stone set up the Zaki Bassiouni Excellence in Instruction Award to honor the teachers and mentors who influenced their lives during their time here at LSU. In addition, they named the award after a person who reinvigorated the Industrial Advisory Group for the Department and gave them a voice to express that appreciation in Dr. Bassiouni."

"I am deeply aware of the student-centered legacy of the people that were the foundation of the LSU Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering and am both humbled and honored to have the responsibility that receiving this Award means. I thank Mr. and Mrs. Stone for their contributions and support of our efforts in developing the next generation of Petroleum Engineers," said Hughes.

Annual recipients will be selected each December by anonymous ballot of the senior undergraduate students who are scheduled to graduate from PETE in the current semester or the next spring semester, and is subject to endorsement of the department chair or his/her designee.
