ECE Holds Capstone Design Presentations

May 6, 2009

LSU's Electrical & Computer Engineering Department (ECE) held their 2009 Capstone Design Student Presentations on May 5. Capstone Design, a two-semester course where student teams and faculty collaborate to design and manufacture ECE projects, challenges students to use the technical knowledge acquired in undergraduate study in addressing real-world applications. Student teams are responsible for procurement, management, accountability and presentation of their projects.

Projects presented from ECE Instructor, Bryan Audiffred's Electrical Engineering 4820 class included:

Hurricane Air Cannon and Pressure Chamber, by Jeffrey Beben, Gerard Chutz, and Keith Faffney

Jumping Ring Control System, by Michael Erdey and Peter Ford

Automated Traffic Management System, by Austin Moreau and Robert Rouquette

Industrial representatives were invited to observe the presentations and guide questions to help students gain an industrial perspective. Guests included ECE alumni and industry representatives: Sal Bernadas, Richard Capone, Donnie David, Mike Miesch, Jerry Rispone, and Ryan Whittington.

For three years, ECE students have partnered with mechanical engineering students to pilot a joint interdisciplinary design program. Formally an elective, the Capstone Design Course will become part of ECE's required curriculum for freshman entering in the 2009 fall semester. The curriculum change enhances the interdisciplinary aspects of the program and gives students communication, teamwork and leadership experience.
