Clifford J. Mugnier, instructor for LSU Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, was invited to present a two and a half day seminar on Military Geodesy with respect to Grids and Datums used for Effects-Based Targeting at the Joint Warfare Analysis Center (JWAC) in Dahlgren, Virginia in January 2009. Geodesy is defined as the branch of geology that studies the shape of the earth and the determination of the exact position of geographical points. The series of lectures was attended by the civilian and commissioned officer staff of the JWAC center. Mugnier was later presented with the Commander's coin in an award ceremony after conclusion of the lecture series. A Commander's Call at the Officer's Club concluded the meetings.

JWAC is a premier science and engineering institution tasked with solving complex challenges for our nation's soldiers. JWAC uses social and physical science techniques and engineering expertise to assist soldiers in support of our national security. JWAC coordinates directly with the staffs of all Unified Commands, Combatant Commands, Department of Defense elements, military services, and other government departments and agencies in order to protect our country and help our nation's armed forces accomplish their missions.
