A strong focus of LSU’s Flagship Agenda is to raise the rank and profile of LSU among peer universities nationwide, and the College of Engineering (CoE) exemplifies that charge. CoE showed improvement in the 2009 U.S. News & World Report: “America’s Best Graduate Schools.” The magazine assesses more than 1200 private and public college programs nationwide and factors these comparisons based on aspects such as peer school assessment, acceptance rigor, job placement, and assessment of the quality of faculty, research, and students.

CoE saw several increases in its rankings this year. Overall, the College of Engineering is ranked 87th out of 198 doctoral programs, moving up from its previous ranking of 89. In the specialty rankings, Electrical & Computer Engineering was given the specialty rank of 83rd, moving up from its previous ranking of 96 from 167 schools; Chemical Engineering was given the specialty rank of 53rd, moving up from its previous ranking of 59; and Civil Engineering was given the specialty rank of 57th, moving up from its previous ranking of 60 out of 140 programs. Petroleum Engineering retained the specialty rank of eighth out of 16 petroleum engineering programs ranked and Mechanical Engineering was given the specialty rank of 73rd out of 164 programs, both the same as in 2007.

These improvements mark steps toward achieving the goals of the LSU Flagship Agenda to place the University in a position to compete on all levels with the finest public universities in the country.

U.S. News selects some specialty program disciplines for inclusion because of high enrollment, but the magazine includes others that are only offered at a limited number of schools because of particular or emerging importance in that field. Only the top programs among those surveyed get ranked, so just making the list in itself is an accomplishment.

U.S. News does not provide new rankings for each graduate discipline every year, but it does republish previous years’ rankings for those not surveyed this year.

The magazine will rank undergraduate college programs in its August issue. For more rankings information, visit www.usnews.com/grad.
