Breeana Baker, a first-year student in the Gordon A. & Mary Cain Department of Chemical Engineering (ChE) undergraduate program, is a recipient of a 2007-2008 academic year scholarship from the American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholars Program. The scholarship provides a monetary award as well as both academic and industrial mentors to assist in her studies as she strives to meet her educational and professional goals. Breeana’s academic mentor at LSU will be department chair Dr. Kalliat Valsaraj. Her industrial mentor will be an R&D project engineer with PPG Industries. Breeana was chosen as one of 10 students sponsored by PPG Industries, who also secures industrial mentors for these scholars.

The scholarship program is designed to encourage African-American, Hispanic, and Native American students to pursue undergraduate college degrees in the chemical sciences and chemical technology. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit and financial need, and for students who have strong academic records and show an interest in and potential for careers in chemical sciences.
