Dr. Louis Thibodeaux, Jesse Coates Professor in Chemical Engineering, has been named as an ad hoc member of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act for the Scientific Advisory Panel (FIFRA/SAP). He will join the panel for its meeting in October 2008. This meeting will address issues associated with the Risk Assessment Process for Pesticides with Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and Toxic Characteristics. It will take place at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Conference Center in Arlington, VA.

The FIFRA/SAP plays an important role as the preeminent scientific peer review system for the EPA’s Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances (OPPTS). The panel provides scientific advice, information and suggestions to the EPA on the environmental and health-related impacts of pesticides and related issues. It originated in 1975 as a permanent panel of seven members nominated by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, and appointed by the EPA Administrator. In addition to the permanent members, at least 60 scientists are selected to the Science Review Board on an ad hoc basis to offer their assistance in the Scientific Advisory Panel reviews. With his selection, Dr. Thibodeaux joins an elite group of expert scientists who furnish professional advice to the Agency.
