Nicholas Ashley has won the 2008 Paper Award given by the Environmental Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Ashley is a PhD student researching under Dr. Kalliat Valsaraj and was one of three first place winners in the 2008 Graduate Student Papers Competition.

In his paper entitled, “Multi-phase contaminant distributions inside flooded homes in New Orleans, LA, following Hurricane Katrina: A modeling study,” Ashley explains the first-hand research and advanced modeling he did on pollutants of mold films and aerosolized mold spores inside of homes. This research helped to evaluate the risk that returning residents and workers faced when they reentered their homes after the storm. Ashley was assisted by Dr. Valsaraj and Dr. Louis Thibodeaux in his research.

The AIChE will present Ashley with a $500 award and honor him at an awards ceremony taking place at the 2008 Annual Meeting of the AIChE in Philadelphia in November 2008.
