Halliburton Career Expo and Luncheon
September 12, 2007
On Tuesday, September 11, Halliburton came to LSU and sponsored a Career Expo for College of Engineering students at Patrick Taylor Hall, East parking lot. Mike Hopkins, Gulf of Mexico Technology Manager was on hand to explain what Halliburton was hoping to accomplish with this enjoyable event. “Halliburton is known within the petroleum industry and specifically within the petroleum engineering department, for providing oilfield technology and engineering support. Although we hire Petroleum Engineers, the majority of our engineers are from other disciplines. When asked which disciplines specifically, he responded, “Civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, chemical engineers, agricultural engineers and industrial engineers.”The Halliburton-sponsored Career Expo and Luncheon was intended to elevate awareness of the career opportunities they have for all Engineering graduates. “LSU is the flagship university for the Gulf of Mexico Region,” said Mr. Hopkins. He also mentioned that the need for engineers is growing at Halliburton and these same engineers go on to fill technical sales, technology support, training, and management roles. He mentioned that Halliburton has a high number of LSU grads in all areas of the company.
Halliburton brought in equipment to illustrate the scope and variety of engineering support. The Cementing Unit (called the “Red Tiger”), is one example. This mobile unit allows mixing and pumping of oil field cement for zonal isolation. The cement slurry must stay in liquid form until it is in place before it starts to harden. Halliburton uses engineers to model and test cement slurries at simulated well conditions to ensure that the process works in high pressure and high temperature situations.
Electrical Engineering (EE) junior Carlos Addison says that he knew Halliburton recruits and hires EE grads before this event, but he is most interested in R&D, technology & design, and he didn’t realize that they do a lot of that too.
Haliburton was one of 280 employers recruiting this year at the Career Expo on Thursday, September 13 in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
