CEE Hosts Tribute to Virginia Tech
September 10, 2007
On April 16th, 2007, twenty-seven students and five professors at Virginia Tech were killed in the worst school shooting in US history. Of the thirty-two victims, nine were in an advanced hydrology classroom, one of the most localized areas of violence. On the weekend of the LSU-VT football game, Saturday September 8th, 2007, the LSU Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering honored the victims of the tragedy. The organizations behind this tribute hosted eight students and one professor to honor their fallen colleagues. The guests toured New Orleans on September 6th and 7th and visited downtown Baton Rouge to view the State Capital and governor's mansion. Game day was filled with LSU tailgating involving true Cajun/southern hospitality, including tickets to the matchup between #2 LSU and #9 VT under the lights of Tiger Stadium.
This tribute was led by many organizations mainly at LSU, as well as Virginia Tech. Universities across the nation helped the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in US history; and CEE students approached the tribute as a unique opportunity to host deserving students and a professor adjusting to life. Furthermore, a donation was made to the Hokie Spirit Scholarship Fund.
