At a check presentation on Friday, April 20, DuPont de Nemours & Company donated two checks of $5000 each to LSU.  One gift was designated for the Minority Engineering Program (MEP) in the College of Engineering; the other was allocated to the Department of Chemistry in the College of Basic Sciences.  Welcoming DuPont spokespersons Mari Talavera and Kenneth Fountain (an LSU alumnus now with DuPont) were LSU College of Engineering Dean Zaki Bassiouni, MEP coordinator Cheryle Peters, Dr. George G. Stanley (standing in for Dr. Isiah Warner, vice chancellor of Chemistry), and Marc Peterson, treasurer of the National Organization for the Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE).

Talavera emphasized DuPont's desire to build closer ties with the University.  LSU engineering and chemistry graduates are desirable employees for DuPont.  The criteria for employment are stringent:  students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in school and have worked either one session as an intern for DuPont or two sessions elsewhere.  To help strengthen DuPont’s presence on campus, it is stepping up its recruitment efforts both for hiring and for internships, Ms. Talavera said.

DuPont is a science-based products and services company.  Founded in 1802 and operating in more than 70 countries, DuPont offers a wide range of innovative products and services for markets including agriculture and food; building and construction; communications; and transportation.
