October 25, 2007
At a check presentation on Wednesday, October 24, the LSU Foundation received a $50,000 philanthropic donation from Fluor Corporation, designated specifically for Departments in the College of Engineering and the Office of Career Services. College of Engineering Dean Zaki Bassiouni joined fellow LSU officials in welcoming Ian J. Foster, Executive Director of Construction Management & Strategy, as well as other Fluor representatives. As part of his presentation, Foster presented how LSU and Fluor are working on the Fluor College Relations Program. “Flour’s objective is to hire and retain the best and brightest college graduates. We want to build the right teams and put together the top people to create top solutions,” said Foster. “As we work together, we show our passion to invest in the best solutions for the future, especially in a global infrastructure.” Foster also spoke of Fluor’s dedication to safety as its number one priority and being one of the ten safest companies in America.
The philanthropic gift from Fluor was presented to the following Departments:
- Women in Engineering Program was given $9,800 for its Inaugural Summer Program.
- Construction Management & Industrial Engineering received $5,500 for its safety research and demonstration projects.
- Chemical Engineering was given $3,000 for student achievements and activities.
- Electrical Engineering received $5,500 to be used for the robotic student competition.
- Mechanical Engineering (ME) also received $5,500 for continued support for ME student projects, such as the Mini-Indy, Mini-Baja, and the High Altitude Student Platform.
- Civil & Environmental Engineering will use their $5,500 donation to fund multiple student projects, including its concrete canoe, steel bridge, and annual environmental design contests.
- Multiple College student groups and Departmental student organizations will receive assistance from a $10,200 Fluor donation to further their student initiatives.
Following the reception, specific Departments met with Fluor representatives to discuss future collaborative efforts to benefit students and faculty. “This philanthropic funding to LSU is designed to seed and develop our future leaders, while we develop positive relationships with LSU and increase Fluor visibility at LSU,” concluded Foster.
