On October 10, 2007, DuPont de Nemours & Company donated two checks of $3,000 each to the LSU College of Engineering (CoE). The Mechanical Engineering Department (ME) received one check, designated for scholarships. DuPont spokespersons Mari Talavera, Kenneth Fountain (an LSU alumnus now with DuPont), and Chris Payne were welcomed by Dr. Glenn Sinclair, ME Department Chair and Don Eisenberg, of the CoE Office of Development. The Chemical Engineering Department (ChE) received the other $3,000 check, which is also to be used for scholarships. Dr. Karston Thompson, ChE Associate Professor and Harriett Pooler of the CoE Office of Development were also on hand to welcome the DuPont representatives to LSU.
Mrs. Talavera emphasized DuPont's desire to build closer ties with the University. “LSU engineering and chemistry graduates are desirable employees for DuPont. The criteria for employment are stringent: students must maintain a 3.0 gpa in school and have worked either one session as an intern for DuPont or two sessions elsewhere. To help strengthen DuPont’s presence on campus, we are stepping up recruitment efforts both for hiring and for internships,” Ms. Talavera said, including full-time, co-op and intern positions.
