LSU has recently hired Daniel S. Katz, a high performance computing expert and information systems and computer science principal at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JLP). Katz will serve as an associate research professor in LSU’s Department of Electrical Engineering as well as head the Scientific Computing Systems and Software group for the Center for Computation & Technology.

While working for NASA, Katz worked on a variety of high-performance computing projects in Earth and space sciences and engineering. One such project involved the creation of a computer modeling tool for a space antenna. In another position, he led the scientific applications portion of a project to develop a processing system that would allow for advanced data processing to take place on a spacecraft rather than on Earth.

Katz received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1994. He has received more than 15 technical awards from NASA, JLP and the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has published nearly 100 journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers relating to computer science and high-performance computing. His work has received more than 250 citations by scientists and researchers worldwide. He also has served in a variety of roles in the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, including serving on the executive committees of the Technical Committee on Scalable Computing and the Technical Committee on Parallel Computing.
