The Goldwater Scholarship Program, funded by the Goldwater Foundation, was established in 1986 in Congress to honor Sen. Barry M. Goldwater. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, spent 30 years in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Goldwater Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers through scholarships awarded to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields.
The Goldwater Scholarship Program’s Board of Trustees awarded 323 scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic school year. Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,081 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
