Marc L. Levitan has been elected to chair the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Wind Loads on Petrochemical Structures Task Committee. This committee is charged with updating and expanding the ASCE guidelines for determination of wind loads on petrochemical facilities.

Initially published in 1997, the ASCE guidelines have subsequently become widely adopted by the process industries. Levitan was a member of the original committee that created the first guidelines. Much of current industry practice for wind load design of open-frame process structures and pipe rack structures is based on his research and that of his graduate students.

Levitan is director of the LSU Hurricane Center, associate professor of civil engineering, and holder of the Charles P. Siess, Jr. Professorship in Engineering.
