Pre-College Engineering Programs

REHAMS 2009 Challenge Course
PREP's ultimate goal is to increase the pool of students who enter college engineering programs by providing academic preparation and exposure to career possibilities in engineering. Many of the programs participants choose to attend LSU. In addition to REHAMS, the Pre-College Engineering Program (PREP) programming includes the Engineering Week activities designed to inspire and encourage students to choose engineering as their future career. The Engineering Expo targets K - 8th grades students and their parents while Shadow Day aims at high School Students. All of these activities are led by the student organizations and allows for the participants to interact with individuals from the entire LSU engineering community, including faculty, staff, and students as well as alumni working in the engineering occupation.
REHAMS
In 1977, the first Recruitment into Engineering of High Ability Minority Students (REHAMS) program was held at LSU. This was the beginning of a formal, concentrated effort to recruit and retain minority students by the College of Engineering. Since then, the REHAMS program has provided pre-college students an opportunity to explore engineering through a holistic overview of the field by presenting both the academic structure and career possibilities.
REHAMS 2009 was a two week residential camp providing the participants the opportunities to:
- Interact with LSU engineering student leaders, faculty, and industry personnel
- Gain insight into what college life is like as a LSU engineering student and experience living on-campus
- Participate in hands-on activities, lectures, and industry tours while learning about the different fields of engineering
- Sharpen communication skills
- Learn about admissions and financial aid and what you can do to prepare for college

2009 Participants get a firsthand look at Mechanical Engineering by building and testing Marshmallow Shooters
Engineering Expo
The Engineering Expo offers elementary and middle school students a day of workshops, games, competitions and scientific demonstrations designed to expose both the students and their parents to the excitement of engineering and science.
Shadow Day
Shadow Day is a free one day campus event for high school juniors and seniors who are interested in learning how engineering is shaping our world and bringing ideas to life and Learn about the LSU's scholarship, housing, and admissions processes. Shadow Day is open to all students with an interest in engineering. The event provides an opportunity for future engineers to interact with student leaders and members of the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, LSU professors, and alumni engineering professionals.
