John Laufer
Dr. Laufer is professor and chairman of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Southern California, a position he has held since 1964.
In this, and in other positions he has filled at the California Institute of Technology, the National Bureau of Standards, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Dr. Laufer has made many highly noteworthy contributions to the engineering profession: His research in turbulence, aerodynamic noise, and other fundamental assets of fluid mechanics has produced forty-four publications in this field in which he is and internationally recognized authority.
In 1977, Dr. Laufer was elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering. Other awards he received include a John Guggenheim fellowship; a Fulbright-Hayes fellowship; a NATO senior fellowship in science; and the distinguished faculty award from USC. He was named ADARD consultant and delivered a series of lectures on selected topics in fluid mechanics in France, Italy, and Holland. He served on the NASA Advisory Committee on Fluid Mechanics and on the Board of Editor of "Physics of Fluids" and "Applied Mechanics Reviews." He is a consultant to major aerospace corporations.
Dr. Laufer is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Institute of Aeronautica and Astronautics and a member of Tau Beta Pi and Sigma Xi. He is a 1943 B.S. graduate of LSU in ME (aeronautical engineering program) and received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.
