Chester P. Seiss
A 1936 civil engineering baccalaureate graduate from LSU with master's and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Illinois, Dr. Siess is recognized for the eminence he acquired in the field of concrete-steel structures through his research, teaching and professional activities at Illinois from 1941 until his retirement in 1978; the last five years of this service was as head of the Department of Civil Engineering.
During this period Dr. Siess was the author of eighty-five articles. He also made significant contributions to the profession through his service on technical and administrative committees of the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Highway Research Board, the American Society for Testing and Materials, and other professional groups, both national and international. He was the recipient of some seven medals, awards, and research prizes form these same societies.
His service to the engineering profession was further recognized by his early induction into the National Academy of Engineering in 1967 and by his election to the national presidency of the American Concrete Institute in 1974.
Dr. Siess has served as consultant to the Army, the Navy, and the Atomic Energy Commission. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa and other national honorary societies.
