Edward McLaughlin Dean's Medal for Excellence

The Edward McLaughlin Dean's Medal for Excellence was created in 1997 by the Dean's Advisory Council of the College of Engineering, at that time led by Newton B. Thomas, to recognize the outstanding contributions of Dean Edward McLaughlin during his 28 years of service to the University as a professor, researcher, Chemical Engineering Department chairman, and dean for 10 years.

The bronze medal is 2 ½ inches in diameter and hangs from scarlet and gold ribbons, the colors of the University of London, Dean McLaughlin's alma mater. It depicts two shamrocks representing his homeland and a Louisiana swamp scene, complete with cypress trees and logs, turtles, egrets, and pelicans, including one in flight symbolizing the promising career in store for the recipient.

At each Fall and Spring College of Engineering Diploma Ceremony, the medal to the graduating senior with the highest grade-point average.
